How To Link Cells in a Workbook

When it comes to using Microsoft Excel in the right way, you have to learn how to link cells in a workbook. A cell address in Microsoft Excel is the intersection of a column and a row. The total columns display letters from A to XFD and the rows have numbers from 1 to 1,048,576. So, when you select a cell, which is in the fourth column and 23rd row, the address is D23. There are three methods to create links between cells in a worksheet. Cells could be linked in same worksheet or in different worksheets and even in different workbooks. This feature is very helpful when updates have to be made across different cells and sheets at the same time and it also save a lot of time.

First method is to select the cell in the sheet where you want to make the link and then type “=” sign; then select the cell from which the link has to be made and hit ENTER; the link between the cells has been made and the information from the second cell has been entered into the first selected cell. You may check it by changing the information in the second cell to see if the information changes in the first cell or not.

Second methods involves selecting the cell of which you want to make the link from and then click COPY on the toolbar; next, click the cell on which the you want to link to and then click EDIT and then PASTE SPECIAL and then select PASTE LINK from the PASTE SPECIAL box. To check the link, same method applies as given earlier. The information changes in the cell when it is changed in the source cell.

Third method for linking the cells is kind of manual. First step is to note the sheet name and cell number of which you need to make the link from; next, click the cell where the link ought to be made and in the box type “=sheet number!$column letter$row number”. For example if the name of sheet is Harvard and the column letter is A and row number is 5 then you will type “=harvard!$A$5”; ‘$’ sign represents the absolute cell address and appears both before the column letter and the row number. The data displayed in the original cell and the linked cell will be the same and would change by changing the original cell value.
