Excel file contains three spreadsheets or as we know worksheets by default. These sheets have names sheet1; sheet2 and sheet3 by default. These sheets can be opened by clicking on the tabs containing the names on it; one can find it left below corner of the screen. Furthermore sheets can be added or deleted. These sheets are separate tables present in the same file or workbook. Depending on the number of tables or the amount of data you need, you may have more than three worksheets. If u want to add new sheet in work book then excel will create a new sheet with the default name .But, it would be difficult to understand the purpose of each worksheet with the default names like sheet 1, sheet2 etc. It is better to rename the worksheets so that the data is easily identified.
Renaming the sheets in a workbook is very easy. The sheet names originally used are not very descriptive and you have the option to change the name to whatever is helpful to you in remembering the data in the sheet. But, this new descriptive name has to be less than 31 characters. Firstly, select the sheet which you want to rename. By selecting, you see that the worksheet becomes active and the name appears in bold letters. Next, you can either double click the sheet tab or you can right-click it and select the option to RENAME on its menu. With this, the current name gets selected. Once you start typing the new name, the previous one automatically disappears and then finally hit ENTER or click somewhere else out of that sheet to complete the process. Now, the new sheet name appears on the bottom of the tab of workbook.
There is also a shortcut key for renaming a sheet. But, first you need to select the sheet to open the sheet then hit the ALT key and O H R keys simultaneously: ALT+O, H, R (Format menu, Sheet submenu and Rename command). This customized name is only for our reference. Internally, the name does not change and the worksheets are still known by their default names. So, if you use some application where a reference to Excel sheet is being made, never use the customized name. Rather, use the default name.
